Whether you plan to spend your time camping with family or hanging out with friends this summer, every gathering needs a fun playlist to encourage even the shyest partygoer to let loose. So grill some dogs, or veggie dogs if that tickles your fancy, and kick start your summer on a high note.
“I’m Shakin’” – Jack White
The new Jack White song, a cover of Little Willie John’s 1961 hit, is quick-paced and infectious. It’s easy to please a group of people with a Jack White tune, and this track from Blunderbuss is a rock ‘n’ roll anthem. As the title states, “I’m Shakin’” will ensure a little shimmy and a shake.
“Do to Me” – Trombone Shorty
There’s nothing like some New Orleans jazz to add spice to a party, and Trombone Shorty’s “Do to Me” is modern, rock-fused jazz. Troy Andrews goes under the moniker Trombone Shorty and plays trombone–of course–and has dreamy, blues-tinged vocals. This track from 2011’s For True features Jeff Beck for an added guitar punch. Just try to not dig this song.
“(You Gotta) Fight for your Right (To Party)” – Beastie Boys
Not only shall you honor the late, great MCA, “Fight for your Right” is obviously an ideal party song. Possibly better suited for a late-night gathering or “friends only” bash, this classic proves your party is better than your nosey neighbors’. Blast it, and rock out.
“Deadbeat Summer” – Neon Indian
For those seeking a little electronic love, Neon Indian and all their shoegaze glory can add an electric vibe to your party. Wrapped up a pretty little distorted package, “Deadbeat Summer” is so hazy, this track may have to be held until the latter part of a gathering.
“Naked Kids” – Grouplove
Grouplove’s youthful energy is poppy and infectious, and “Naked Kids” is a well-suited tune to summery drinks and the hopes of days spent on the beach.
“The Way We Move” – Langhorne Slim
Folk crooner Sean Scolnick cries out as Langhorne Slim in this feel-good, passionate song. The modern country-rock subtly drops bluesy effects throughout this beer-slugging sing-along. Driven by a hard-nosed guitar lick and Scolnick’s raw vocals, this tune breathes American country living. “The Way We Move,” is the title track from the Pennsylvania singer-songwriter’s upcoming June 5 release.

“Moneygrabber” – Fitz and the Tantrums
Fitz and the Tantrums has a vintage rock, feel-good tone that can’t upset many at a BBQ. The group’s first single from Pickin’ up the Pieces, “Moneygrabber,” is a catchy, piano-driven tune with just enough kick to get a few toes tapping. The retro vibes will please older generations, and just might change their opinion on the music we kids listen to these days, or maybe that’s a high hope.
“Bright Lights” – Gary Clark Jr.
Gary Clark Jr. is an all-American guitar shredder. With his lovely glaze of Hendrix-like riffs, he is edgy and rugged. “Bright Lights” is a blend of soulful rock and bluesy vocals, and the contemporary nature of this tune can be enjoyed by fans and general partygoers alike.
Whether you prefer a vintage haze, or pop-induced party anthems, a barbeque give us our right as free Americans to drink, eat and enjoy awesome homegrown music.
