A Scandalous Year: Six Songs for 2011’s Biggest Headlines

written by: on October 19, 2011

Just as you have your “workout playlist” or “sleep mix,” we should all have a playlist to accompany the different scandals and corrupt politicians gracing the front pages of our newspapers each day. While investigative journalists are digging through politicians’ trash, we’re digging through the musical archives to find the perfect soundtrack to the corruption of 2011.

Phone-hacking Scandal

Arguably the most scandalous individual in the news media currently, Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive officer of News Corp., has been accused of phone hacking and bribing the police, among other illegalities, to gain stories.

“Mo Money Mo Problems” – Notorious B.I.G.

Featuring Puff Daddy and Ma$e, this Notorious B.I.G. hit, released after the rapper’s death, should be Murdoch’s theme song. “No info for the DEA/Federal agents mad cause I’m flagrant/Tap my cell and my phone in the basement.”

“Somebody’s Watching Me” – Rockwell

This tune is always stuck in your head after you walk out of a cheesy 1980s bar or see the latest GEICO commercial. Along with the catchy yet eerie Michael Jackson-inspired chorus, this song is a tribute to creeps and privacy invaders everywhere.

Weiner Resigns

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York resigned after it was discovered that he used Twitter to send sexual photos and messages to a 21-year-old woman. Many of these photos and messages were sent during his marriage. Republican Bob Turner was elected to take the Democrat’s place in Congress.

“Lyin’ Eyes” – Eagles

The second single from the Eagles album One of These Nights, Glenn Frey has said that “Lyin’ Eyes” spawned from a meeting between a couple in a diner. He imagined the pair to be secret lovers, forced to meet in private. “You can’t hide your lyin’ eyes,” or in Weiner’s case, your Twitter history.

“Under Pressure” – Queen

Featured on Queen’s 1982 album Hot Space, this collaboration with David Bowie is one of the top songs of the ’80s. The song was created during a jam session at Bowie’s studio, which is evident through the scat singing and improvisation that rules the tune. The pressure is definitely on as Turner takes his seat in Congress.

Sheen loses his mind?

Even after being fired from “Two and a Half Men,” Charlie Sheen seems to be doing just fine with his “goddesses” at home and tiger blood in his veins. According to Sheen, the drug he is on, “Charlie Sheen,” isn’t available, but maybe these tracks inspired by winning will melt your face off instead.

“Win” – David Bowie

Although there is nothing slow about Sheen’s life, Bowie’s vocals in this song have the power to put you in a trance. With the backup vocals sounding something like a mellow church choir, just lay back, relax and remember, “All you’ve got to do is win.”

“We Are the Champions” – Queen

Usually heard during a sports highlight reel, this is a worldwide song about going for the gold. Freddie Mercury, a  favorite stached musician, doesn’t disappoint with his flawless, earth-shattering vocals. When you open the dictionary to the word “champion” in a few years, there will probably a photo of Sheen and a description that says, “See: winning.”
