Moore and Gordon have split up.

Sonic Youth Founders May Divorce

written by: on October 17, 2011

After 27 years of marriage, Sonic Youth founding members Thurston Moore, guitar and vocals, and Kim Gordon, bass, have separated.

The band formed in 1981 and helped create the indie-rock genre, and Moore, 58, and Gordon, 53,  have been married since 1984.

Sonic Youth, however, may not survive the separation announced on Friday.

“Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment,” said the band’s representative from Matador Records, according to Rolling Stone.

Performances beyond November are uncertain, even though the band’s website lists dates through January 12, 2012 in New York City, with a New Years Eve show scheduled for the Empty Bottle in Chicago.

In February, Sonic Youth released its latest album Simon Werner a Disparu, the soundtrack to the French film Lights Out.

Moore, who has a 17-year-old daughter with Gordon, released his latest solo album Demolished Thoughts in May.
