Detroit Lions Fans Start Online Petition to Boot Nickelback from Halftime Show

The Detroit Lions are enjoying their best season in years, but they’re still finding ways to upset some of their fans.

The team, with a 6-2 record, has announced Canadian rock band Nickelback will play the halftime concert during the annual Thanksgiving Day game, causing some fans to start an online petition to have the Lions change the halftime show.

“Does anyone even like Nickelback?” the petition site’s mission statement asks. “This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game.”

The petition’s creator is listed as Dennis Guttman, of Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Lions play division rival and defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in what will be the first meaningful Thanksgiving Day game in years for Detroit.

The petition site states that Detroit is home to many great musicians and questions whether the city would want the national game day audience to associate Detroit with Nickelback.

Alice Cooper is from Detroit, as are Eminem, Ted Nugent and Iggy Pop. Even Madonna is from Bay City, Mich.

One Detroit resident has taken to Twitter to voice her unhappiness with the choice.

“On the bright side, at least they didn’t get scary ‘biebs’ to perform. Think I’d have to escape the city,” tweeted NFL fan Amber Harrison, referring to teen pop sensation Justin Bieber.

Nickelback’s seventh studio album, Here and Now, is set to drop Nov. 21.
