The Shins Get Their Tim Burton on With New Video for “The Rifle’s Spiral”
Remember when Fleet Foxes went all claymation on viewers with that "White Winter Hymnal" video a few years ago? Well, The Shins follow suit on this enchanting visual treatment for Port of Morrow album opener "The Rifle's Spiral."
Tim Burton's fingerprints are all over this spellbinding stop-motion feature, which takes a cue from the Gothic playfulness of films such as Coraline or Corpse Bride. Director Jamie Caliri (mastermind behind the ultra-cool credits sequence in that Lemony Snicket film adaptation everyone unfairly glossed over in 2004) takes the music of James Mercer to a land where chairs come to life, magicians rock Janis Joplin frames, and a rabbit grows several stories tall. Trippy stuff, but certainly more creative than anything that's come out in cinemas this year.
Also, if you're one of the fifteen people on Earth who have a Nintendo 3DS, you can watch the video in 3D here.
