This Day In Music History – The Beatles Release Abbey Road

written by: on September 26, 2011

On this day in Rock history, The Beatles released Abbey Road on September 26, 1969 in the UK. Abbey Road was the last album properly recorded by The Beatles before their break up in 1970 and is known as much for its songs as for its iconic cover. From simple recreations to uncovering who that man was in the background (Paul Cole), there is even a webcam where you can watch the famous street from the comfort of your home.

Abbey Road features “Come Together,” “Something,” “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” “Here Comes the Sun” as well as the heavy and weird “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).” The album debuted at number 1 on the UK charts and when released in America on October 1 it met similar success, reaching number 1 in its third week in release. Alan Parsons was one of the sound engineers and would go on to success as a producer and the lead singer in The Alan Parsons Project.

Abbey Road  has been certified 12X platinum and has topped numerous lists for “Best Album” with Rolling Stone naming it the best album by The Beatles and the 14th best album of all time. Abbey Road features The Beatles’ progressive leanings, diverse musical selections, varied song choices and brilliant song writing from John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.  This was an album by a band with still so much more to prove, not of one about to break up.

Where does Abbey Road stand with you?
