Terrible Truths, Rice and Salt, Verma - Bandcamp Hunter Picks

Bandcamp Hunter: Weekly Picks (08/20/11)

Terrible Truths – Terrible Truths 7″

From the South Australian city of Adelaide, Terrible Truths are something of a superband, comprising of members of Bitch Prefect, Rites Wild and Dud Pills. These songs take unconventional twists on indie guitar pop while remaining totally infectious, packed with echoing hooks, a pounding rhythm section and yelping call-and-responses. Like a more hyperactive version of fellow Antipodeans Love of Diagrams, Terrible Truths are frenetic, fun and completely engaging.

Years of Rice & Salt – Nothing of Cities

The latest collection of songs from London group Years of Rice & Salt are emotive  pieces that are wholly engaging in their poignancy and power. Constructed as one continuous composition, it is easy to get lost in the passages these songs lead the listener through. Swelling horns, melancholic guitar and yearning strings create a profoundly beautiful musical experience. At times the songs hit great heights (“Amongst Your Earthiest Words The Angels Stray”) though it is in the subtlety and restraint of this album where it’s true charm lays.

Verma – Salted Earth

This is the second release from Chicago psych-rock outfit Verma and it displays a band that has grown in ability and ambition. Opening track “The Big Sleep” is a brief understated droning jam that deftly sets the tone for what is to come. The double of “Unending Night” and “White Heat” are superb pieces of psychedelia-transportive, intense and sprawling. On “Salted Earth” Verma jettison the listener to the outreaches of the galaxy, and beyond.
