Tyler Lyle – The Golden Age & The Silver Girl

Tyler Lyle is a gifted songwriter who crafted this album in the throes of heartbreak. Musically, this is by no means a progressive affair but that’s not a bad thing. It’s simple folk music with a country edge that’s adorned with gorgeous instrumentation. Soft flutes breathe in and out of the rocking opener, “The Golden Age & The Silver Girl “ while the albums centre piece, “Love Is Not Enough,” features chest heaving horns. Pristine strings accompany the beautiful guitar and banjo throughout on what is a great modern folk album.

Single Twin – Marcus Teague

Marcus Teague was the frontman with popular Melbourne band Deloris, who disbanded a couple of years ago.  Now playing solo as Single Twin (though members of Deloris contribute), Teague has recorded a classy album of gentle, slightly off-kilter folk. The elements that helped shape Deloris as a cult band are present here though with a more understated tone. Songs of heartache (“Dirty Sleeves In The Salty Water”) sit alongside tales that deftly combine domesticity and death (“Came Home Dead”, “Wandering”). A lyrically dense album that reveals more and more with each listen.

Fire Spoken by the Buffalo – Hiatus

Florida’s Fire Spoken by the Buffalo play hard instrumental rock that sits somewhere between math rock and post rock. It’s an expansive and uncompromising sound performed with power and precision. The songs build to dramatic heights while never sacrificing melody and groove. With song titles such as “Broken Axe, Open Wound” and “Cadaver” it is apparent Fire Spoken by the Buffalo have a prominent dark side but they are most certainly not one dimensional. Play it loud.
