Sad Souls, School, Machine - Bandcamp Hunter picks

Bandcamp Hunter: Weekly Picks (July 23, 2011)

Sad Souls – Precious Paragons

Sad Souls creates simple, beautiful, lo-fi folk that gently warms the soul. Glowing soundscapes and dark overtones hint at the influence of the late great Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, though lyrically Sad Souls don’t explore such gothic realms. These are plaintively written songs of soft yearning and heartache that swell with sweet innocence.

School – Use Your Body Words

From the thriving New York City art-rock scene comes School, a hyperactive band that blends a range of musical genres to great effect. Their sound is syncopated rhythms, winding guitar and high pitched female vocals. It is not at all surprising to find out they have associations with the Dirty Projectors. School certainly have their own sound and what a wonderful sound it is.

Machine – Machine

Melbourne’s Machine forge towering walls of noise with arresting sonic intensity. With a super-tight rhythm section and layers of distorted guitar, they are at times reminiscent of countrymen My Disco though Machine is somewhat more expansive. Machine is an exciting new post-rock band with great live potential.
