Plates of Cake – Plates of Cake
Let’s face it, Plates of Cake isn’t a great band name. Such things can be overlooked if the music is good and in this case, it is. The Brooklyn outfit produce music with a distinct 60’s feel while the lyrics have some Leonard Cohen flavour. At times the album broods and looks inwards, though mostly it jaunts along with a wry sense of sense of humour that’s well worth investing in.
Apache Dropout – Apache Dropout
Apache Dropout are trained in the sort of loose rock and roll that evokes excess and good times; a strain of music that’s become quite popular in recent years (a la Smith Westerns). These kids from Bloomington, IN set themselves apart by adding a psychedelic edge that makes their music impossibly infectious.
TANTRUMS – Anomie
The dense and complex music of Melbourne’s TANTRUMS is showcased to great effect here with “Anomie.” Electronic beats interweave with guitars and digital effects to paint a wondrous sci-fi soundscape. Constantly intriguing and beautifully constructed, this is experimental music to lose yourself in.
