High school me is so pissed right now. The indignity of “selling out” and making music explicitly for use in an insurance ad. Weezer put out this new song/jingle “Like a Good Neighbor (State Farm is There).” And while high school me is shunning the band for giving in to the corporate machine, 2011 me is realizing these guys are laughing all the way to the bank, and I can’t really be that mad about it.
What is weird, though, is how critics are saying this is the best Weezer has put out in years. The Fader, for example, says, “all you need to do here is change the lyrics … and you got a a certified Pinkerton-style hit!” It’s easy to make a throwback hit if all you are really doing is making a parody of what you once were. If you don’t have to put any real emotion into the songwriting, and just need to put together sounds that sound like sounds you’ve already made, most of the work is already done for you.
