Emily Wells – “Passenger”

Passenger

There’s something about Texas that is responsible for curating unspeakable talent–and encouraging said talent to move thousands of miles up north. Like Annie Clark (St. Vincent) before her, Emily Wells spent her childhood in the Lone Star state, where she played violin as a four year-old child prodigy.

“Passenger”, the lead single from Wells’ recently released Mama (Partisan Records), owes as much to a childhood spent with strings as it does to a newfound residency in Brooklyn. A mesmerizing collage of sounds, “Passenger” amasses elements from classical, jazz and hip hop. Taking a cue from fellow former-Texan-turned-Brooklynite St. Vincent (there’s that comparison again), Wells stuns with her knack for seamlessly integrating the sounds of the past and present.
